Even though your iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max is small enough to fit in your pocket or backpack, your iPhone 12 Pro Max is a powerful computer. However, it does not have a heat sink or a fan to regulate its temperature and keep things cool, unlike desktop or laptop computers. Any device that is subjected to carry out powerful tasks overheats.

However, there is a difference between your iPhone getting too hot and warm to touch. This article shows you why your iPhone overheats while multitasking, playing games, or doing anything and how to fix it.

Possible Causes of overheating on the iPhone 12 Pro Max and How to Fix them

1. Overheating during and after initial setup

Some consumers have complained that their brand new iPhone 12 overheats during the initial setup and data transfer stages.

If you’re one of these users, you can breathe a sigh of relief because this is somewhat common. Regardless of the phone, initial setups can be quite resource-intensive, and some heating is to be expected.

Allow at least 48 hours for the gadget to settle before checking again. If the problem still exists, move on to the next set of workarounds.

2. Hot Environment

According to Apple, any place’s recommended ambient temperature range to operate any iOS device is between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. If you use your iPhone in an environment where the temperature is above 95 degrees Fahrenheit, it will overheat. It’s all right! Allow your iPhone to cool down by resting it from time to time. If you live in that location, there isn’t much you can do to escape the overheating issue.

3. Apps with Abnormal Usage

Your iPhone 12 Pro overheating issue may be because of abnormal usage of an app. To fix this,

  • Check your iPhone’s battery settings for background apps with unusual usage. Such apps may operate in the background, causing your phone’s processor to be overworked.

You can also disable apps that you don’t want to run in the background by navigating Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

  • Close all Background apps. When you have too many apps running in the background, your iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max can get hot. Closing them forcefully can assist to cool down your phone, but keep in mind that this will do little to help you save battery life. When you reopen those apps, they will consume a significant amount of battery in order to free up memory on the phone.
  • It’s also worth mentioning that several users have linked overheating to the Waze app. They claim that deleting it has alleviated the problem while also extending battery life. Delete the Waze app, maybe that could fix the problem.
  • You can also opt to turn off iPhone analytics. Go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics. After that, turn off “Share iPhone Analytics.”
  • You might also try limiting location access to programs that you don’t think need it. This can be accomplished by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. After that, choose an app and toggle the “Precise Location” switch on or off as needed.

4. Charging

Several users have reported problems with overheating while charging, both wirelessly and by cable.

If you’re having the same problems, your charger may be broken. Make sure you’re using a charger that’s been approved by the manufacturer.

Charge it in a cooler atmosphere as well. You’d be shocked how hot a smartphone can become if it’s left charging in direct sunlight, so avoid it if at all possible.

5. Bad Phone Cover

Avoid using coverings or cases that are too bulky or don’t have enough area to dissipate heat. The phone will overheat if the case traps heat produced by your iPhone (which happens even with minimal use). Experiment with removing the cover to see if the cover causes the problem or not.

6. Poor network reception

Poor Network reception might cause heating problems because the device needs to work harder to find a reliable signal.

Furthermore, the Snapdragon X55 modem appears to be included in Apple’s iPhone 12 series. It’s an external modem, which consumes more power and potentially generates more heat.

Apart from walking up to the nearest 5G tower, which is obviously not practicable, there isn’t much that you can do to improve network service. But now you know why your phone gets hot when you have a terrible signal.

7. Bluetooth, Wifi, Location services, mobile data causing issue

Disable Bluetooth, 5G, mobile data, WiFi, hotspot, location services, and similar features. These services aren’t required all of the time. It doesn’t make sense to keep these services running while you go to bed, for example.

They not only drain the battery, but they also heat the phone, diminishing battery health and, as a result, battery life. When you’re not using them, turn them off. Directly from the Control Center, you can turn them off.

8. Faulty unit

If you’ve tried everything listed above and your iPhone 12 is still getting unusually warm, your unit may be defective. Replacing it will undoubtedly solve the problem.

9. Software Issue

When Apple updates its iOS, there is usually an upgrade in security, performance, and a lot more. Upgrading to the latest iOS may do the trick.
